Colt Model 1861 Navy Revolver
Colt Model 1861 Navy Revolver
Gift of Larry Sheerin / Catalog# 1160 & 1161
The Model 1861 Navy revolver was an improvement of the Model 1851 Navy, incorporating a round barrel that was easier to polish and gave it a more modern look. Considered sleek in appearance, the Model 1861 was one of the best-designed weapons of Colt’s percussion revolvers. Despite its solid design it sold poorly due to a surplus of weapons after the Civil War, the fire at the Colt factory in 1864, and the availability of new cartridge weapons. The manufacture date of the above revolver is 1863 and includes a carving of an eagle in the ivory grip.
